This multi-activity, 5-day winter break starts and ends in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, and ticks off the most popular winter activities in the Tatra Mountains.

For the most part, you’ll be based in the picturesque village of Smokovec, in the shadow of Slovakia´s highest peak, Gerlachovsky Štít (2654m). From there you’ll head out each day to enjoy everything these majestic mountains have to offer.

You’ll have one of our fantastic Slovakian tour leaders as your guide throughout, plus expert activity guides where necessary. You´ll start the week with guided snowshoeing, then get a lesson in cross-country skiing in Strbske Pleso.

You’ll go on to explore the authentic village of Zdiar, take a horse and carriage ride, and have a picnic cooked on an open fire.

Why we think this trip is fantastic, and you’ll love it!

  • You’ll go cross-country skiing around Strbske Pleso, Slovakia´s highest village.
  • You’ll enjoy a horse and carriage ride that ends with a traditional picnic cooked in the Slovakian way – grilled on an open fire.
  • While you’re snowshoeing, you’ll follow routes that were used by local smugglers to bring goods from Poland to Slovakia, with stunning views on Belianske Tatras.
  • Each activity is tailored to your ability – whether you’re an expert at winter sports, or just starting out. Your leaders and guides will be able to help you get the most out of your winter adventure.

Map & itinerary

You’ll meet your tour leader at Bratislava airport or train station. On request, we can also provide a free transfer from Vienna airport to Bratislava train station. Then, you´ll take a fast train to Poprad Tatry – gateway to the mountains.

The journey is just over 3.5 hours long, and takes you through frozen lakes and waterfalls, snow-covered valleys and wintry forests straight from a storybook.

Our destination is Smokovec, one of the biggest and most popular villages in the High Tatras. It’s known for its fantastic skiing and hiking opportunities, which you’ll make the most of while you’re here. After checking in at your hotel there’ll be an orientation walk and you can settle in before tomorrow’s activities begin.

This morning we’ll take a private bus to the nearby village of Zdiar. After a quick lesson on how to use snowshoes, we’ll head off and follow the modest ridge of Spisska Magura.

This relatively easy terrain is the perfect place to try snowshoeing, following routes that were used by local smugglers to bring goods from Poland to Slovakia. The views of the Belianske Tatras’ white peaks are simply stunning.
