This action-packed, week-long adventure starts from Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, and ticks off the most popular winter activities in the Tatra Mountains.

For the most part, you’ll be based in the picturesque village of Tatranska Lomnica, in the shadow of Slovakia´s highest peak, Gerlachovsky Štít (2654m). From there you’ll head out each day to enjoy everything these majestic mountains have to offer.

You’ll have one of our fantastic Slovakian tour leaders as your guide throughout, plus expert activity guides where necessary. You´ll start the week with guided snowshoeing, then get a lesson in cross-country skiing in Strbske Pleso.

You’ll go on to explore the authentic village of Zdiar including a visit to an outdoor museum, a horse and carriage ride and a picnic on an open fire. Plus, you can choose to relax in outdoor or indoor thermal pools and go skiing or snowboarding on the longest runs in the Tatras. All in all, this trip really does have it all.

Why we think this trip is fantastic, and you’ll love it!

  • You’ll go cross-country skiing around Strbske Pleso, Slovakia´s highest village.
  • You can ski or snowboard on the longest slopes of the sunny Tatras.
  • You’ll enjoy a horse and carriage ride that ends with a traditional picnic cooked in the Slovakian way – grilled on an open fire.
  • While you’re snowshoeing, you’ll follow routes that were used by local smugglers to bring goods from Poland to Slovakia, with stunning views on Belianske Tatras.
  • Each activity is tailored to your ability – whether you’re an expert at winter sports, or just starting out. Your leaders and guides will be able to help you get the most out of your winter adventure.

Is this trip right for you?

  • Activities like snowshoeing, winter walking and skiing form a key part of this trip.
  • The activities are planned so people of varying abilities can take part, and are suitable for first-time skiers too.
  • In terms of physical fitness, the hardest day is snowshoeing where you will be expected to walk for about 4.5 hours on moderate terrain.
  • For the rest of the tour no significant physical fitness is required, just a spirit of adventure and a willingness to try something new.

Map & itinerary

Fly to Bratislava or Vienna and enjoy a free airport transfer to your starting hotel.

Beautiful Bratislava needs no introduction – this ancient city set along the Danube River has a fantastic atmosphere, particularly in winter when the whole place feels even more magical.

You’ll meet your tour leader at your hotel to run through the plan for the week, so it’s worth arranging flights for a morning arrival so you have time to settle in. At 5PM they’ll take you on a guided walk of the city so you can see the place for yourself.

We’ve mapped out a walking route that covers Bratislava’s top sights, from Bratislava castle to the 18th-century Primate´s Palace, as well as the old town hall and Michalska gate. If you want to get a closer look at any of the places on the tour you’re welcome to – just bear in mind you’ll need to pay your entrance fees. You’ll then have a chance to head off for dinner.

Of course, this is just to give you an idea – it’s entirely optional, and you can choose to tip as much or as little as you wish.

Tour leader – 2-4 EUR per day
Guides/activity instructors – 2-3 EUR per day
Drivers – 1-2 EUR per day

Customers reviews

Susanne Brächer (Germany) February 2019

Our guide Jan is amazing. He has enriched our stay. The trip was well organized, easy going, professional (also the contact beforehand and after), the activities well appointed and put together. The Hotel we stayed in was fine, good bed, big rooms, balcony, rich breakfast - Jan arranged for some veggies and fruit, so really perfect.

Lisa Crooker (United Kingdom) February 2019

We all had a fantastic time and made new friends. We felt very lucky to be in the group that we had, we all got on very well. It was nice not to have too large a group. We were very impressed with you communication prior to our holiday.
Jan was an excellent guide, very friendly and was keen for us to have the best experience that we could whilst on holiday. The holiday appeared to work well as the members of the group appeared to be of similar fitness and ability (I feel that the holiday might not have gone so well if this were not the case). The activities were thoroughly enjoyed.

Jane Edwards (United Kingdom) February 2020

GENERAL FEEDBACK - YOUR OVERALL EXPERIENCE
Excellent introduction to winter activities in the Tatras. The whole tour was very well organised with a relaxed pace leaving some free time for us to use the Wellness Centre, go into town for a drink etc.

WHAT WERE THE HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUR TRIP?
Cross country skiing (in a blizzard!), the funicular from Stary Smokovec and hike to Rainerova chata (beautiful snowy hike) , dressing up in the museum (what fun), the horse and carriage ride (amazing!) and the final day going up Lomnicky stit on the cable car (thank you Petr, we would never have worked out how to get up there without you!). Every day was a highlight to be honest.

ACCOMMODATION
The Bratislava hotel was fab and view of Danube much appreciated. The hotel Uran was comfortable and our room was lovely and warm with plenty of hot water. The wellness centre was very nice at the end of an active day. However, its worth noting that the evening buffet at the hotel was very limited for non meat eaters. There were also some issues about room servicing which Petr quickly resolved.

TRANSPORT
Transfers and trains were all on time and very efficient. Petr took his car when the rail link to Strbske Pleso wasn't running due to a fallen tree. Petr worked hard to ensure we used the most time efficient way to get to places so that we could spend the most time there.

MEALS
Breakfast in both hotels was fine with a reasonable breakfast buffet. There is a good selection of restaurants in Tatranska Lomnica so plenty of choice for evening meals. Plus Petr was happy to make suggestions about places we could try.

PLEASE RATE YOUR LEADER
Fabulous! A++ Thank you Petr.

WERE YOU DISAPPOINTED WITH ANY PART OF YOUR TRIP?
No, not at all. The only very small point I would make is that the BBQ on day 5 is great for meat eaters but it would have been nice for Jeff, as a non meat eater, to have been able to join in and perhaps BBQ a veggie sausage.

WHAT TIPS WOULD YOU GIVE OTHER TRAVELLERS BOOKING THIS HOLIDAY?
Be prepared for changing weather conditions and make sure you have good waterproofs and warm thermal clothing. Also, be prepared to have great fun and lots of laughs.
