Active families will love this European mountain adventure in Slovakia. We’ve designed a trip where the whole family can join in with exciting winter activities like snowshoeing, dog-sledding and skiing. And all with a backdrop of stunning scenery – from winding valleys and lofty peaks, to crystal-clear mountain lakes and frozen waterfalls.

An expert local tour leader will look after you during this eight-day winter adventure, and there’s a comfortable hotel to return home to each day. We’ve planned some really special family experiences, too, like a horse and carriage ride with a woodland picnic served on an open fire at the end.

Why we think this trip is fantastic, and you’ll love it!

  • You can tick off culture in Bratislava before you venture into the mountains.
  • The whole family can try snowshoeing, dog sledding and, if you want to, snowmobiling, snow-tubing and ice skating.
  • There’s a horse and carriage ride included, and you’ll travel through the village of Zdiar before stopping for a feast of local food, cooked on a Slovak-style barbecue on an open fire.
  • As this is a winter holiday, you’ll have the chance to experience skiing or snowboarding down Slovakia´s longest runs on the sunny slopes of the Tatras.
  • This trip will immerse your family in Slovakian culture – from the hospitality at our specially-chosen hotel, to the visit to a Goral village high in the mountains.

Map & itinerary

Bratislava is an amazing city brimming with history, and it’s the starting point for this trip. The Old Town is a treasure trove of narrow lanes and historic houses, and the city’s attractive squares are a great place to people-watch from a pavement café.

Before you start exploring, you’ll meet your tour leader at your hotel to run through the plan for the week, so it’s worth arranging flights for a morning arrival so you have time to get settled.

At 5PM, they’ll take you on a guided walk of the city, so you can get an insider’s perspective on all the must-see sights. The walking route ticks off things like Bratislava castle, which stands proud on a hill above the Danube river, and the 18th-century Primate´s Palace, old town hall and Michalska gate.

If you want to get a closer look at any of the sights, that’s fine – you’ll just need to pay the entrance fees. And while you’re exploring, you can find a restaurant for dinner and sit down to a family meal.

Christmas Market: If you’re visiting between 22 November and 22 December you’ll be able to experience the magical atmosphere of Bratislava´s Christmas market, which is a real treat for children.

It’s all aboard this morning as we hop on a train and leave the city of Bratislava behind. Our destination is the High Tatra Mountains, the biggest and oldest national park in Slovakia. The journey to Poprad Tatry – gateway to the mountains – takes over three and a half hours and is an adventure in itself!

Outside your window, it’s like a scene from a fairytale. You’ll speed past frozen lakes and waterfalls, snow-capped peaks and ridges and forests and valleys blanketed in white.

We’ll reach Tatranska Lomnica, one of the biggest and most popular villages in the High Tatras, and you’ll check in to your hotel. We’ve arranged an orientation walk, then you can settle everyone in ready for a busy day tomorrow.

A cable car will take you to the start of your sky-high adventure today, then you’ll get a unique, bird’s-eye view of the beautiful Belianske Tatras on a treetop walk. The 1,234-metre-long walkway takes you through the forest to an observation tower, where you can keep watch for rare and exciting wildlife. This is a fun excursion for the kids as they'll be as tall as the trees while they’re spying on animals!

You'll then move on to your next exciting escapade. After a quick lesson on how to use snowshoes, you’ll head off, following the modest ridge of Spisska Magura. This easy terrain is the perfect setting to sample family snowshoeing, following routes that were used by local smugglers to bring goods from Poland to Slovakia. Plus, the views of the Belianske Tatras’ white peaks are simply stunning. Kids will love ploughing through the snow with what look like tennis rackets on their feet, and poles to help them along.

Our adventure continues in Zdiar, a typical Goral village, full of traditional wooden houses and barns. You’ll learn about the local way of life, before taking a horse and carriage ride through the forest and enjoying an unforgettable Slovak-style barbecue on an open fire.

After breakfast, you’ll transfer to the heart of the Tatra Mountains, famous for their dramatic ridges, hillside meadows, distinctive rock formations and caves. The high, snow-covered meadows offer great conditions for dog-sledding. Professional mushers will teach you the basic principles of handling the dog sled, and then you can have a go yourself. This is a great skill for parents to try, and such an exciting activity for the kids to have a go at – they’ll be the envy of their friends at school!

Later on, you’ll visit indoor and outdoor thermal pools – you get three hours to relax here. For an extra cost, payable locally, you can also enjoy saunas, Jacuzzis and a wellness centre.

Then, you’ll take an easy 20-minute walk to Rainerova chata, the oldest mountain hut in the Tatras.

After lunch, the afternoon is all yours for optional downhill sledding or skiing.
