If you’re keen to experience the wonder of the Slovak Paradise National Park at your own pace, this self-guided tour should be top of your list. Over five days you’ll hike and walk through this incredible scenery with the help of detailed maps, descriptions and itineraries provided by local experts. The journey, though, is all yours.

Canyons, rivers and gorges are here in abundance, so your hike through the Slovak Paradise will be an adventurous one. Prepare to cross bridges and climb metal ladders as you take in all that this huge national park has to offer – stopping to take photographs or just pause and soak up the scenery when you want to. If you’re in search of an off-the-beaten track adventure, this is the tour for you.

Why we think this trip is fantastic, and you’ll love it!

  • Slovak Paradise is full of flower-filled meadows – you can find up to 74 different rare flowers, orchids and lilies per square metre.
  • This self-guided tour is perfect if you love adventure – walking across ladders and bridges adds a unique dimension to the trek.
  • River canyons, waterfalls, caves and rock-cut ravines provide a platform for adventurous and exhilarating walking.
  • The terrain is home to amazing fauna, too, including brown bears, wolves, lynx and eagles.
  • We’ll supply you with all the info you need – maps, itineraries and support when you need it – to have an amazing self-guided adventure.

Is this trip right for you?

  • This trip is not for the faint-hearted and you’ll need a head for heights. If you love stunning scenery and are happy with something a little more daring, this gets you to some of the best and most hidden areas of the park.
  • Rated as grade four, this is a demanding trekking trip. The walks will be longer on more difficult trails, which may require surefootedness and a head for heights.
  • There will also be altitude changes on this trip. As well as stamina and a good level of fitness, ideally you will have had experience of mountain walking or completed some long-distance walks.

Map & itinerary

On day one you’ll arrive in Levoca, which is located in the foothills of Slovensky Raj, or Slovak Paradise National Park. Medieval Levoca, a former royal town, is a jewel of the Spis region, and one of the most visited towns in Slovakia.

The historic main square is a magnet for tourists from all over the world, and it’s easy to see why. You’ll find burgher mansions with gabled roofs, the Gothic Church of St. Jacob, with the biggest wooden alter in the world, as well as beautifully-preserved city walls.

The UNESCO town of Levoca will be your home for the next four nights. In the midst of three national parks, this is the perfect base for your walking adventure.

When you get here, we’ll give you a comprehensive ‘self-guided pack’, which has detailed descriptions and maps for each day’s walking, as well as information about the local area.

Hotel – Levoca

Slovak Paradise was declared a national park in 1988 and is one of the youngest in Slovakia. It certainly lives up to its name as a paradise for those looking for adventurous walks in a beautiful location. Full of caves, canyons and gorges, the walks here use metal ladders and bridges to cross and climb the gaps.

This morning you’ll transfer 20 minutes to the heart of the Slovak Paradise National Park, where you’ll start your self-guided walking adventure with a hike through the 13km Prielom Hornádu canyon. A 13km-long section of the river cuts through a gorge, and ladders and bridges take you along and up it. The most visited part is the ´Tomasovsky Vyhlad´ rock gallery, where a 200m limestone rock rises up from the Hornád River and provides stunning views of the park. In the late afternoon you’ll head back to your hotel.

Today’s walk is a fairly adventurous circular route. Starting in a popular tourist centre, Podlesok, you’ll go through the most romantic gorge in Slovakia, Suchá Belá – a world of cascades, waterfalls and gorges. Walking through the canyon involves crossing exposed sections of the gorge on ladders, steps, bridges and chains.

The descent back to Podlesok will be on relatively easy terrain on comfortable forest roads and paths, and you will stop at the ruins of a Courtesan monastery, hidden in the heart of the National Park.

Today’s walk is a moderately difficult, circular route.

Starting in a small settlement, ‘Píla’, you’ll make your way through the wide river valley of Velkej Bielej vody to narrow Piecky Canyon. The beginning part, on forest roads, is easy, before you head deeper into the valley and towards the gorge. Piecky Canyon is the most attractive part of the hike, and also the most demanding.

The canyon’s tall sides play host to rocky steps and tumbling waterfalls. Below these cascades are pools in the rocks known as ‘ovens’, or Piecky in Slovakian, which is where the canyon gets its name. It’s these geological formations that make today’s walk unique. Secured by ladders, chains and steps, you’ll pass through the massif Velky vodpad waterfall on a 13m high ladder and continue on to smaller valleys. The last part of the route is on a comfortable path, which will lead you once again to Podlesok. From here, our driver will transfer us back to the hotel.

During the summer season from June to September, the most popular months for walking, the weather in the High Tatras is typically variable.

Temperatures can vary greatly, according to whether you are located on the sunny side of the slopes or in deep valleys, or canyons.

In the early summer even the higher parts of the mountains are green, with the slopes providing plenty of food for the grazing chamois, bears and other wildlife that the Slovakian mountains are well known for.

July and August are the warmest months, with temperatures at times reaching 30 °C, but with more frequent storms.

September is the driest months with the most stable weather of the year. The temperature falls but it is still possible to experience some hotter daytime temperatures, similar to those in July and August.

An entry visa is not usually required by citizens of EU, USA, CAN, AUS and NZ. Citizens from other countries should confirm all visa-related issues with the relevant Embassy prior to departure.

You need to be in good physical health to participate in this trip. Please read the itinerary carefully and, if you’re in any doubt, contact one of our team for guidance. We recommend you carry a first-aid kit with you, and contact your doctor for up-to-date vaccination advice.
