Discover the rich history and fascinating folklore of Central Europe as you cycle through the landscapes of three different countries in one tour: Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

This fully escorted bike tour starts in the elegant city of Vienna, Austria´s capital, which is famous for its impressive imperial sights. You’ll then cross the Austria-Czech border to explore the south of the Czech Republic and its UNESCO Lednice-Valtice complex. Sometimes called the Garden of Europe for its beauty, it’s also known as the Moravian Versailles.

Next, you’ll cycle into Slovakia and the royal town of Skalica. This jewel of Western Slovakia is home to rich folklore and wine-making traditions, which you’ll have a chance to experience. Our cycle path then leads us along the Iron Curtain Trail following the Morava river to Bratislava, Slovakia´s capital and the former coronation city of the Austro-Hungarian kings. Our final ride is a spectacular cycling route along the Danube river back to Vienna, where our tour ends.

Why we think this trip is fantastic, and you’ll love it!

  • This is a fascinating bike tour combining well-known highlights with the off-the-beaten track gems of Central Europe.
  • You’ll explore the untouched countryside of Austria, Czech Republic and Slovakia in one cycling holiday.
  • You’ll experience wine tasting with a local wine dresser, trying some locally produced wines and many other local specialities.
  • You’ll cycle through vineyards and protected areas that were once heavily guarded by the Czechoslovakian army during the communist regime until 1989.
  • A bike ride from capital to capital within one day is a special experience that is rarely found outside of Europe.

Map & itinerary

Welcome to Vienna, the capital of Austria. This city of imperial sights, coffee houses and traditional wine taverns is located on the banks of the Danube river. And it makes the perfect starting point for this cycling tour in Central Europe.

After arriving at your hotel we’ve included a short guided walk in the heart of the Old Town before dinner in one of the local traditional Viennese restaurants. If you wish to explore the city in more detail, we recommend booking an extra night before or after the tour.

Follow in the footsteps of Sissi and Emperor Franz Josef as you wander along narrow, medieval alleyways and imperial squares. And visit the most famous sights, like the Schonbrunn Palace, Imperial Palace (Hofburg), or even the museum of Mozart.

Meals included: none
Accommodation: Hotel Boltzmann (or similar)

After breakfast we’ll transfer 68 km to a small Austrian town called Poysdorf to collect our bikes. Surrounded by vineyards and wine cellars, this will be our starting point for our first day of cycling. This is a relatively short 20 km ride to warm us up and get us familiar with our bikes.

In the afternoon we’ll reach the medieval town of Mikulov. The region is well-known for producing some of the best Czech wines, as well as its rich folklore traditions. After checking in we´ll have a short guided tour before dinner in one of the local traditional Moravian restaurants.

Total cycling: 20 km
Terrain: tarmac

Meals included: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel Galant (or similar)

This morning we’ll cycle across the protected area of Palava to the village of Pavlov, which is located by the reservoir Nove Mlyne (New Mills). On the way we’ll pass ruins of two little castles, with vineyards everywhere around us. Our route then continues to the Lednice-Valtice UNESCO grounds, known as the Moravian Versailles and Garden of Europe. You’ll have time to visit the biggest attractions here including the Lednice Chateau, built by the Lichtenstein family, the minaret, for stunning views over the chateau and park, and the large complex of wine cellars and underground passages. In the early evening we’ll head back to Mikulov.

Total cycling: 45 km
Terrain: tarmac and gravel

Meals included: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel Galant (or similar)

This morning, following the royal cycle path, you’ll cycle to Cejkovice to visit the amazing 800-year-old wine cellars built by the Knights Templar. After the guided tour you´ll continue over the border to Skalica, at the foothills of the White Carpathians.

Skalica’s monasteries, fortifications and unique triangular square make it the jewel of Western Slovakia. The area is rich in folklore and wine-making traditions, and this evening you´ll experience wine tasting with a local wine-dresser and have a chance to sample some of the locally produced wines including Skalický Rubín (Skalica´s Ruby), which is a reference to its specific colour. This wine can only be produced using grapes grown on the precisely defined territory of the Royal town of Skalica and several neighbouring villages, including Mokry Haj. This village was established in the foothills of the Vintoperk Hill by Croatian colonists in the second half of the 16th century.

Total cycling: 65km
Terrain: tarmac

Meals included: Breakfast, Dinner
Accommodation: Penzion na Potocnej (or similar)

After a short guided stroll in Skalica you’ll transfer 69 km to Zahorska Ves. From here you´ll follow the Iron Curtain Trail, the border between Austria and Czechoslovakia during the communist regime. Cycling through floodplain forests and protected areas, our main stop will be the Devin castle located at the confluence of the Morava and Danube Rivers. From here you can admire beautiful panoramic views over Austria.

Today´s cycling will end with a ride to Bratislava, Slovakia’s capital, which has an intriguing history of its own.

Total cycling: 40km
Terrain: tarmac and gravel

Meals included: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel Devin (or similar)

This day is free to explore charming Bratislava, the former coronation city of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Have a stroll through the narrow streets of the Old Town and a wander along the Danube with its many cafes and restaurants.

There are numerous fascinating historical buildings in Slovakia’s capital. Some of our favourites are Bratislava Castle, the old town hall and the 18th century Primate’s Palace, which has a beautiful pink and white façade and an amazing Hall of Mirrors. Just bear in mind that you’ll need to pay any entrance fees.

Your tour leader will be there to help you with your chosen activities.

Meals included: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel Devín (or similar)

Today you’ll follow the popular Danube cycle path all the way from Bratislava to Vienna. The path leads us through the Donau-Auen National Park, which preserves the last remaining major wetlands area in Central Europe.

Once you get to Vienna, there will be time for a short stroll in the Old Town before our farewell dinner in one of the local Viennese restaurants.

In terms of distance, this is the most demanding day of the tour. The terrain is flat and normally everyone with an average level of fitness is fully capable of completing the ride all the way to Vienna.

Anyone wanting to make this day easier can of course use our support vehicle that will be there with you each day.

Total cycling: 70km
Terrain: tarmac

Meals included: Breakfast
Accommodation: Hotel Boltzmann (or similar)

After breakfast you’ll transfer to the airport or extend your stay in Central Europe by booking another one of our tours starting in Vienna or Bratislava.
