Active families will love this European mountain adventure, which starts in Poland’s former capital city and packs in five full days of adventures in the Slovakian Tatra Mountains.

We’ve designed an itinerary that allows the whole family to join in with exciting winter activities, with a stunning backdrop of winding valleys, lofty peaks, crystal-clear mountain lakes and frozen waterfalls. Activities include things like snowshoeing and dog-sledding, with plenty of special extras to make your family holiday truly magical.

An expert local tour leader will look after you, and there’s a comfortable hotel to return home to each day. This is a winter adventure you’ll be talking about for years to come!

Why we think this trip is fantastic, and you’ll love it!

  • You’ll have a chance to explore the ancient city of Krakow on a guided walk.
  • Your family can try snowshoeing and dog-sledding, bathe in thermal pools and, if you want to, go snowmobiling, snow-tubing and ice skating.
  • There’s a horse and sleigh ride included where you’ll travel through the village of Zdiar to the nearby forest before stopping for a feast of local food, cooked in the woods on a Slovak-style barbecue.
  • This family winter holiday includes the opportunity to experience skiing or snowboarding, this time on Slovakia´s longest runs on the sunny slopes of the Tatras!
  • Your family will experience real-life Slovakian culture – from the hospitality at our specially-chosen hotel, to sampling local food and drink.

Is this trip right for you?

  • Activities such as winter walking, snowshoeing and dog-sledding form a key part of this trip.
  • The activities are planned so people of varying abilities, and children of different ages, can take part.
  • No real physical fitness is required, just a family spirit of adventure.

Map & itinerary

Krakow may not be Poland’s capital any more, but it’s undoubtedly the country’s cultural hub – so it’s the perfect place to start your Polish-Slovakian family winter adventure.

You can start exploring the incredible architecture and pretty cobbled streets as soon as you arrive – your tour leader will meet you at your hotel to run through the plan for the week, so it’s a good idea to arrange flights for a morning arrival. Later, they’ll take you on a guided walk of the city. It starts at 5pm, so you’ll need to be at your hotel by then.

The walking route has been carefully planned so you can take in all of Krakow’s main sights, including the main market square – Rynek Glówny – as well as Wawel Cathedral and Wawel Castle. Just bear in mind you’ll need to pay the entrance fees if you’d like to get a closer look at any of these.

Christmas Market

If you’re visiting between November 29 and January 7, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy the magical atmosphere of Krakow´s Christmas market.

Hotel – Krakow

This morning we’ll leave the city of Krakow and country of Poland behind and head into the heart of the High Tatra Mountains, the biggest and oldest national park in Slovakia.

This is an area of phenomenal natural beauty, so you can expect to see frozen lakes and waterfalls, snow-covered valleys and forests, craggy peaks and ridges.

The journey takes just over two and a half hours, and you’ll cross the Polish-Slovak border to head into the heart of the High Tatras.

Our destination is Tatranska Lomnica, one of the biggest and most popular villages in the High Tatras. After checking in there’ll be an orientation walk around the hotel, so you can get your bearings.

Private vehicle from Krakow to Tatranska Lomnica

Hotel – Tatranska Lomnica

A cable car transports you to the start of your sky high adventure. Get a unique, bird’s eye view of the beautiful Belianske Tatras on a treetop walk. The 1,234 metre long walkway takes you through the forest to an observation tower, where you can keep watch for rare and exciting wildlife. This is a fun excursion for the kids as they'll be as tall as the trees spying on animals!

You'll then move on to your next exciting escapade... After a quick lesson on how to use snowshoes, you head off, following the modest ridge of Spisska Magura. This easy terrain is the perfect setting to sample family snowshoeing, following routes that were used by local smugglers to bring goods from Poland to Slovakia; the views of the Belianske Tatras’ white peaks are simply stunning. Kids will love ploughing through the snow with what look like tennis rackets on their feet, and poles to help them along.

This is a great skill for parents to try, and such an exciting activity for the kids to have a go at – they’ll be the envy of their friends at school!

Customers reviews

Mary Ann Kenny (United Kingdom) December 2019

We had a fantastic holiday and came home feeling refreshed and invigorated. We had tons of exercise and fresh air and met a lovely group of people. The activities were great fun and very varied and were suitable for both adults and children.

Lots of highlights, so it’s hard to choose! Skiing, thermal pools, winter walk to Skok waterfall, BBQ, sledging

The accommodation was ok. Warm, dry and clean. It was a bit cramped and gloomy, but it’s not like we spent much time in our room!

Really nice friendly driver. Punctual and helpful. All transport – both public and private – ran on time and was warm and comfortable.

I loved the breakfast every morning in the hotel. The packed lunches were ok. And we bought our own evening meals at various restaurants in the area which were consistently good value. It was interesting to try the local food. I was impressed by the quality of everything we ate and drank.

Andrej was a fantastic leader. He genuinely wanted us to have a good time and really seemed to care about us all. He was calm, efficient and organised and was able to relate to everyone in the group, from kids to adults to granny! Lovely guy.

The trip notes state that no real physical fitness is required. This is an understatement as some of the activities - snow shoeing for example - are quite strenuous. Not a problem for our family but best to be forewarned!

Steve Thompson (United Kingdom) December 2019

Great family winter holiday for all ages, excellent mix of activities in a beautiful landscape. It was nice to be with other families and make new friends.

Snowshoeing was really good, hard, but we really enjoyed it. We also enjoyed the BBQ in the woods and sitting around the fire, the hosts were so welcoming. We also enjoyed the skiing and loved the sledging (all big kids!)

Rooms were clean and comfortable. Our only criticism was the lack of relaxation space, the lounge area is quite small and there are no facilities.

Excellent throughout and was very accommodating with Jane (Liz’s mum)

Breakfast was ok. Good choice of restaurants locally, Andrej helped us with recommendations and reservations and we had some lovely meals.

Andrej was excellent and so helpful. He was also very good company and we enjoyed talking to him over dinner about his life and the other tours he is a guide for.

Definitely take strong walking boots, if you’re nervous on icy paths/tracks then crampons would be a good idea. A buff/balaclava would be a good idea too.

Lisa Cooke (United Kingdom) February 2019

We all had a fantastic time and made new friends. We felt very lucky to be in the group that we had, we all got on very well. It was nice not to have too large a group.
We were very impressed with you communication prior to our holiday. Jan was an excellent guide, very friendly and was keen for us to have the best experience that we could whilst on holiday. The holiday appeared to work well as the members of the group appeared to be of similar fitness and ability (I feel that the holiday might not have gone so well if this were not the case). The activities were thoroughly enjoyed.

Kerry Godliman (United Kingdom) February 2017

We really enjoyed our holiday. All the activities were lovely and despite my daughter not being fully well (had a cold throughout the week) the kids loved it. Our guide Dana was great, she really made us feel looked after. The weather was fine, albeit a bit warm for snow, but no one can help that! Thanks for all your help, and send our thanks again to Dana.

Alison OCallaghan (Dubai) February 2016

We had a fantastic holiday and loved Slovakia! Our guide Linda was brilliant and did everything to make our stay a memorable one.

Helene Demetriades (United Kingdom) February 2016

Go ahead and book it! Great fun, with variety. I would recommend skiing in Strbske Pleso – I found that a very beautiful location. Of course it helped that there was lovely snow that day. Children will love the adrenalin water tubes at the thermal pools. And do have a go at being a sledge driver with the dogs! It is quite exhilarating!
