Discover the Tatra Mountains on a short break full of treks to waterfalls, valleys and craggy peaks. Within the mountains’ tapestry you will find a wealth of wildlife, flower-carpeted meadows and crystal-clear glacial lakes. Over two days, you will get the opportunity to hike to the summit of Velka Svistovka (2038m) and enjoy Slovak hospitality at traditional mountain huts. This mini holiday is the perfect way to revitalise with a healthy dose of fresh air, good food and simply stunning views.

Why we think this trip is fantastic, and you’ll love it!

  • Explore the natural beauty of the Tatra Mountains and its wildlife on a mini-break – the perfect way to rejuvenate. The mountains are home to lakes, waterfalls, flowers, valleys, craggy peaks and ridges, which provide the perfect habitat for mammals and birds.
  • Centre-based holidays are fantastic if you want a comfortable base to return to each night. We’ve chosen a nice, three-star hotel, which is perfectly located for heading out on each day’s hike and enjoying traditional, tasty food at local restaurants in the evening.
  • You’ll get to attempt the summit of Velka Svistovka (2038m). The mountain provides a challenging, yet perfectly achievable climb, and you’re rewarded with panoramic views from the top.
  • Self-guided holidays give you the freedom to be your own boss. You can walk at your own pace, take little detours to something that catches your eye off-track and take satisfaction from the fact that you navigated your own route.

Map & itinerary

Welcome to Tatranska Lomnica, located in the shadow of the beautiful High Tatra Mountains. The town is a popular centre for hiking in the summer, and skiing in the winter. Its claim to fame is the very long cable car, which transports you to the top of Lomnický štít (2634m), Slovakia’s second highest mountain.

Tatranska Lomnica will be your base for the next seven nights.

Upon arrival you’ll receive a comprehensive ‘self-guided pack’, which contains detailed descriptions and maps of each day’s walking, as well as information on the local area.

Depending on your arrival time, the rest of the day is free to explore.

Hotel – Tatranska Lomnica, Slovakia

After a good breakfast, you take a cable car ride to the mountain lake of Skalnate Pleso (1751m). This crystal-clear lake is surrounded by forested hills and towering granite peaks, and there’s an astronomical and meteorological observatory near the top, which you’ll have time to look around.

Velka Svistovka (2,037m) is next on our route, well-known for its high concentration of Tatra chamois. Endemic to the High and Low Tatras, Tatra chamois are a rare subspecies of the chamois. It’s thought that there are only about 600 left. They often wander around in this alpine terrain, close to where you will be walking.

The trail is secured by chains on a few of the more difficult sections, but the mountain provides an accessible and gratifying climb. From the summit of Velka Svistovka, make your descent to the Zelene Pleso Hut. Located at the glacier lake of the same name this is an absolutely beautiful spot for lunch.

From Zelene Pleso you continue to Biela Voda from where you take a public bus back to Tatranska Lomnica, which is only about 10 minutes away.

Total walking
Five hours, 10km/six miles. Ascent, 284m. Descent, 1128m.

Hotel – Tatranska Lomnica, Slovakia

Today, your starting point is once again Skalnate Pleso, from where you trek to three of the Tatras’ mountain huts. Mountain huts have been part of the fabric of the Tatras’ for years; they’re traditional, welcoming and often have a historic story to tell. They provide lovely lunches for you to re-fuel, too!

Your hike will take you via Rainerova, the oldest hut in the mountains, so something very special to visit. It dates back to 1863 and today is a small stone building serving drinks and snacks. Teryho Hut is the one of the highest in the High Tatras, and Zamkovskeho is a quaint wooden chalet offering the perfect, shady resting spot.

Your route will also take you via Cold Creek Waterfalls, where you can pause and soak up the al fresco atmosphere. The waterfalls start where the Great Cold Creek meets the Small Cold Creek and tumble their way over rocks and boulders, and through pine forests; walking trails take you alongside the fizzy cascades.

From Hrebienok, you descend to Smokovec by funicular cable car and take the mountain tram back to Tatranska Lomnica.

Total walking
Seven hours, nine km/5.6 miles. Ascent, 540m. Descent, 730m.

Your adventure comes to an end today.

If you wish, we can help you to book more nights and different activities. Our recommendations would be another walk in the High Tatras, or the neighbouring Slovak Paradise National Park known for its adventurous walks through canyons and gorges. You can also visit the UNESCO site of Spissky Castle, the biggest castle in Central-Eastern Europe.

Either straight after breakfast, or later in the day, transfer to the airport for your flight home.

During the summer season from June to September, the most popular months for walking, the weather in the High Tatras is typically variable.  Temperatures can vary greatly, according to whether you are located on the sunny side of the slopes or in deep valleys, or canyons. In the early summer even the higher parts of the mountains are green, with the slopes providing plenty of food for the grazing chamois, bears and other wildlife that the Slovakian mountains are well known for. July and August are the warmest months, with temperatures at times reaching 30 °C, but with more frequent storms. September is the driest months with the most stable weather of the year. The temperature falls but it is still possible to experience some hotter daytime temperatures, similar to those in August.

An entry visa is not usually required by citizens of EU, USA, CAN, AUS and NZ. Citizens from other countries should confirm all visa-related issues with the relevant Embassy prior to departure.

You need to be in good physical health to participate in this trip. Please read the itinerary carefully and, if you’re in any doubt, contact one of our team for guidance. We recommend you carry a first-aid kit with you, and contact your doctor for up-to-date vaccination advice.

We recommend you pack as light as possible, with a suitcase or backpack that are easy to lift and carry. A daypack for activities is also useful. Below you will find a recommended packing list. It is by no means exhaustive, so if you’re in any doubt, please contact us.

• Walking boots
• Trainers
• Shorts and t-shirts
• Walking trousers and tops
• Fleece or warm jumper

Nicky Webber (United Kingdom) July 2019

We really enjoyed our walking weekend break. Airport was really convenient and pick ups were all on time. The Hotel was great location and lovely and clean. We found the breakfast was adequate for a days walking but it would of been nice to have tea/coffee facilities in the room. I would recommend this trip to walkers but make sure they are fit because its not that easy. We really enjoyed the huts and great value. The amazing scenery was out best highlight.Thank you Petr for organising the trip and we would recommend people to use your company if travelling to Slovakia.
