If you’re short on time but keen to see the very best of the High Tatra mountains, this five-day walking tour will be perfect for you. It starts and ends in Poland’s former capital, Krakow, so you can tag more time on at either end if you want to see more of the city under your own steam. The itinerary in the Tatras packs in three days of walking adventures before you make your way back to where you began.

During the tour, you’ll hike to the summit of Velka Svistovka (2,038m) for panoramic views, stop for a taste of hearty Slovakian food on a day’s hiking between traditional mountain huts, and soak up the tranquillity of crystal-clear lakes and forested valleys on mountain walks.

Along the way, you can stop and photograph the incredible scenery, pausing for a coffee and a snack at one of the mountain huts along the way. Your guide will be on-hand to help throughout, and you’ll head back to a comfortable hotel in the mountain village of Tatranska Lomnica at the end of each action-packed day.

Why we think this trip is fantastic, and you’ll love it!

  • The Tatras are an outdoor enthusiast’s dream – the mountains are home to lakes, waterfalls, flowers, and valleys that make the perfect habitat for mammals and birds. Plus, you can observe rare Tatra chamois up-close.
  • Centre-based holidays give you a homely base to return to each night. We’ve hand-picked a nice hotel, which is well positioned for heading out on hikes each day and is close to local restaurants for meals in the evenings.
  • This is a great choice for explorers who prefer to follow an itinerary where the organisation – including transfers and activities – is managed by your guide.
  • Mountain huts are steeped in Tatras’ history, whether they were once used in the gold rush era, or home to partisans during the war. Today, they provide a great spot for a drink and snack with a view.

Is this trip right for you?

  • This is a walking holiday for those who enjoy being outdoors and have a love of the mountains.
  • The stones on some of the paths can be slippery when it has rained.
  • On certain days there are sections secured by chains. The climbs are not physically demanding, but you must have a head for heights.

Map & itinerary

Fly to Krakow and meet your guide, then enjoy a private transfer for the 2.5-hour journey to the majestic High Tatras.

Our base for the week will be Tatranska Lomnica, one of the most popular villages in the Tatras, and the perfect starting point for many popular walking trails.

In the afternoon you’ll be taken on an introductory walk in the village to get to know your surroundings.

Activities included
Airport transfer
Transfer to Tatranska Lomnica

Meals included

Hotel – Tatranska Lomnica, Slovakia

After a good breakfast, you’ll take a cable car ride to the mountain lake of Skalnate Pleso (1,751m). This crystal-clear lake is surrounded by forested hills and towering granite peaks, and there’s an astronomical and meteorological observatory near the top, which you’ll have time to look around.

Velka Svistovka (2,038m) is next on our route, well-known for its high concentration of Tatra chamois. Endemic to the High and Low Tatras, Tatra chamois are a rare subspecies of the chamois. It’s thought that there are only about 600 left. They often wander around in this alpine terrain, close to where you will be walking.

The trail is secured by chains on a few of the more difficult sections, but the mountain provides an accessible and gratifying climb. From the summit of Velka Svistovka, make your descent to the Zelene Pleso Hut secured by chains. Located at the glacier lake of the same name, this is an absolutely beautiful spot for lunch.

From Zelene Pleso you’ll continue to Biela Voda, then take a public bus back to Tatranska Lomnica, which is only about 10 minutes away.

After breakfast you´ll take a mountain tram to Stary ´old´ Smokovec, the oldest village in the Tatras, followed by a funicular to Hrebienok (1,285m) the starting point of our walk.

Today you’ll hike through the Studena Dolina Valley. From its narrow beginnings, the valley gradually gets wider; terraces harbouring mountain lakes tower above. Pause and enjoy the sight of colourful flowers, scent of pine trees and sound of rare birds singing in the mountains as you traverse the valley.

The valley leads you up to Zbojnicka, or ´Robbers´, Hut, where you can enjoy a traditional lunch of soup and dumplings. Zbonicka (‘robbers’) Hut is one of the highest at an altitude of (1,960m) and still a popular base for trekkers. Its name harks back to the days when it was a hunters’ hut, and poachers used to stalk the valley.

Your hike ends where it started, at Hrebienok. From here, you take a funicular and tram back to your hotel and a well-earned dinner!

Today, your starting point is once again Hrebienok, from where you’ll trek to three of the Tatras’ mountain huts. Mountain huts have been part of the fabric of the Tatras for years; they’re traditional, welcoming and often have a story to tell. They provide lovely lunches for you to re-fuel, too!

Your hike will take you via Rainerova, the oldest hut in the mountains. It dates back to 1863 and today is a small stone building serving drinks and snacks. Teryho Hut is one of the highest in the High Tatras, and Zamkovskeho is a quaint wooden chalet offering the perfect, shady resting spot.

Your route will also take you via Cold Creek Waterfalls. These waterfalls start where the Great Cold Creek meets the Small Cold Creek and tumble their way over rocks and boulders, and through pine forests. Walking trails will take you alongside the fizzy cascades.

From Hrebienok, you’ll descend to Smokovec by funicular cable car and take the mountain tram back to Tatranska Lomnica.

During the summer season from June to September, the most popular months for walking, the weather in the High Tatras is typically variable. Temperatures can vary greatly, according to whether you are located on the sunny side of the slopes or in deep valleys, or canyons. In the early summer even the higher parts of the mountains are green, with the slopes providing plenty of food for the grazing chamois, bears and other wildlife that the Slovakian mountains are well known for. July and August are the warmest months, with temperatures at times reaching 30 °C, but with more frequent storms. September is the driest months with the most stable weather of the year. The temperature falls but it is still possible to experience some hotter daytime temperatures, similar to those in August.
