Kosice

About

Kosice is Slovakia's second biggest city, situated in the east of the country on the banks of the Hornád river, close to the Hungarian border.  It was awarded the prestigious European Capital of Culture in 2013.  The city itself has a well-preserved historical centre, the largest in Slovakia.  There are many heritage protected buildings in Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Art Nouveau styles with Slovakia's largest church, St. Elisabeth Cathedral.  The long main street, lined with aristocratic palaces and Catholic churches, is a thriving pedestrian area with many shops, cafés, and restaurants.
