Hiking Across Slovakia’s High Tatras

Arrive in Tatranská Lomnica and settle into your first mountain base beneath the High Tatras. Depending on your arrival time, take a gentle look around the village or simply recover from the journey. Dinner is at your own choice this evening before the guided hiking begins tomorrow.

Set out from Tatranská Javorina and climb from forest into the open limestone landscape of the Belianske Tatras. Cross broad mountain meadows and Kopské Saddle before descending towards Veľké Biele Mountain Lake and Biela Voda. Back in Tatranská Lomnica, gather for an included group dinner after the longest standard hiking day of the trip.

Ride by cable car to Skalnaté Pleso and begin the day high on the mountainside, with the central Tatras opening around you. Follow the Tatranská Magistrála past Zamkovského Mountain Hut, Rainerova Mountain Hut and the waterfalls around Hrebienok, with the option to stop for lunch at a mountain hut. Continue on foot to your next two-night base in Starý Smokovec.

Return to Hrebienok and follow the Tatranská Magistrála beneath the central High Tatras towards Velické Mountain Lake. Pause at Sliezsky Dom below the granite walls around Gerlachovský Peak before beginning the longer descent to Tatranská Polianka. A short mountain-train journey brings you back to Starý Smokovec for a free evening.

Leave Starý Smokovec by mountain train and begin walking towards Popradské Mountain Lake, pausing at the Symbolic Cemetery along the way. Have lunch beside the lake before taking the more scenic mountain trail through forest and across the slopes towards Štrbské Pleso. Arrive on foot at your final two-night base, where your main luggage is already waiting.

Walk straight from Štrbské Pleso into Mlynická Valley, where forest gradually gives way to open mountain slopes and granite walls. Reach Skok Waterfall for a Trail Lunch, with a chance of spotting Tatra chamois on the surrounding slopes. Return to Štrbské Pleso for time at the spa before gathering for a farewell dinner on your final evening.

Enjoy a final breakfast at Štrbské Pleso before the guided journey comes to an end. Your onward journey is yours to shape, whether you are travelling home or continuing elsewhere in Central Europe. Slovakia Explorer can arrange an airport, railway-station or onward-hotel transfer on request.

Kraków is a practical international gateway for many overseas travellers. Allow approximately 2 hrs 30 min by road to Tatranská Lomnica, depending on traffic.

Other Options

Košice Airport (KSC) and Poprad-Tatry Airport (TAT) may also be convenient depending on your flight connections.

Arriving by Train — Poprad-Tatry

Poprad-Tatry is the main long-distance railway gateway for the High Tatras, with onward regional rail connections towards Tatranská Lomnica.

The journey uses three two-night mountain bases, moving from Tatranská Lomnica to Starý Smokovec and finishing at Štrbské Pleso. The accommodation style progresses from characterful local stays to a 4-star mountain hotel with spa for the final two nights. The trip includes six breakfasts, two Trail Lunches and two dinners; other meals are not included, giving you freedom to choose locally.

Move west for two nights in Starý Smokovec, placing you close to the central High Tatras and the mountain railway. The planned property is Villa Dr. Szontagh or a carefully selected alternative of comparable comfort and character.

ŠTRBSKÉ PLESO · 4-star Mountain Hotel with Spa

Finish with two nights at Štrbské Pleso in a 4★ mountain hotel with spa facilities. The planned property is Hotel Solisko or a comparable alternative, giving the journey a comfortable final base beside the western High Tatras.

Activity Level: Moderate. Most hiking days are around four to five hours, with the longest planned day at six hours. The itinerary combines valley paths, forest trails and higher mountain paths, with meaningful ascent and descent but no planned technical climbing or chain sections. Wear well-worn waterproof hiking boots with good grip and carry waterproof layers, warm clothing, water, food and spare layers in a small daypack. Any additional safety equipment specifically required by the mountain leader for planned conditions is provided.

No technical climbing experience is required for the standard itinerary. Regular hillwalking experience and confidence on rocky, uneven mountain paths are strongly recommended.
