Introduction

Walking in Slovakia means mighty mountains to conquer, a myriad of forest paths, river walks and hut-to-hut trekking. Whether you’re new to walking holidays or a regular trekker, we’ve got a varied selection of hiking in the Slovakian Carpathian Mountains and High Tatras, from gentle strolls on easy trails to challenging hill walks and peak bagging. Discover amazing wildlife, rolling hills, deep canyons, alpine meadows and majestic rocky peaks; Slovakia’s landscapes will take your breath away. It’s time to explore one of Slovakia’s best assets, the great outdoors!

When to go

During the summer season from June to September, the most popular months for walking, the weather in the Slovak mountains is typically variable.  Temperatures can vary greatly, according to altitude, whether you are located on the sunny side of the slopes or in deep valleys.

In the early summer even the higher parts of the mountains are green, with the slopes providing plenty of food for the grazing chamois, bears and other wildlife that the Tatras are well known for.

July and August are the warmest months, with temperatures at times reaching 30 °C, but with more frequent storms.

September is the driest months with the most stable weather of the year. While it is still possible to experience some hotter daytime temperatures similar to those of July and August, in general it is a little cooler, most notably in the mornings and evenings.

The weather in the Tatra Mountains can change very quickly so come prepared for all situations:  sun, wind, rain and storms and you will not get caught out.

Don’t forget that in Slovakia you will find the highest summits of the entire Carpathian bend stretching across four countries including Ukraine, Romania and Serbia.  Come to Slovakia and explore the roof of the Carpathians!

Activity Levels

Each tour has a grade. The grade determines how easy or difficult the tour is in terms of activity level. The grading system goes from number one to five, with number one being the easiest, and number five the hardest. This helps you to decide if the tour is suitable for you in terms of fitness, and if you think you’ll enjoy it. Below is a description for each of the numbered activity level grades.

Level One
These trips are pretty easy walking tours designed for people who are looking for plenty of relaxation, as well as walking amidst stunning mountain scenery. There might be a little bit of ascent and descent. Good health is the requisite for this trip.

Level Two
These trips involve moderate walking. You will walk on mountain trails, forest tracks and footpaths, sometimes on uneven terrain. There will be ascent and descent, and walks on higher ground so you need to be comfortable with heights. This trip is suitable for most regular walkers who have a reasonable level of fitness.

Level Three
This is a demanding trekking trip. The walks will be longer on more difficult trails, which may require surefootedness and a head for heights. There will also be altitude change on this trip. As well as stamina and a good level of fitness, ideally you will have had experience of mountain walking or completed some long distance walks.

Level Four
The walks on this trip cover long distances with challenging ascent and descent. Trails may be exposed and you will reach altitudes of up to 2,500m. These trekking holidays sometimes require basic mountaineering skills. Surefootedness, a head for heights and an excellent level of physical fitness are essential requirements.

Level Five
These trips verge on mountaineering and will involve climbing tougher peaks with the use of specialist equipment. There will be long days, tough conditions, trekking at altitude and difficult terrain. Basic mountaineering experience, including use of equipment, is essential.

Top Destinations

In Slovakia you will find nine stunning national parks, each of them is a real paradise for walkers.  In 2016 we have focused on three of the most popular including The High Tatras (VysokeTatry), Slovak Paradise (Slovensky Raj) and Mala Fatra. Each of them is unbelievably rich in fauna and flora, full of rocky peaks, deep valleys, thick forests, waterfalls, beautiful caves, mountain streams and alpine meadows.  You can read more about those parks in the section of National Parks.
