Cross country skiing

Cross country skiing in Slovakia

If you are an enthusiast of cross-country skiing or simply looking for a change from your regular ski experience then there is no better place to test your stamina and strength than along the Slovak mountain ranges. Avoid the queues for the ski lifts and explore Slovak mountains on cross-country skis.

With abundant opportunities for cross-country skiers of all levels, we offer a range of routes from those which take you along clearly marked and well maintained tourist trails, across mountain ridges from where you have beautiful views of the surrounding countryside, to quieter, less frequented tracks and paths which lead through peaceful, romantic forest settings.

Surrounded by the breathtaking scenery of snow covered peaks, valleys and forests, you won‘t be able to resist exploring the snowy wilderness and charm of our alpine paradise, in the company of family or friends.

When to go

Cross-country skiing is one of the most popular winter sports in Slovakia. Generally, the season starts in December. We recommend booking your cross-country skiing holiday for January, February or March when the Slovak mountains usually provide better snow conditions.

Grades

Our cross-country skiing holidays have been separated into 5 different grades. It is important that you select the right grade. Which one is for you?

Grade 1: Beginners

Cross-country skiing holidays for beginners. The guided lessons will be focused on the basics, including how to stop using the snowplough technique, learning how to run and turn. You will practise skiing on tracks cut in the snow but also be prepared to have a go on easy off the tracks, generally traversing across meadows or frozen lakes.

Grade 2: Improvers
These trips are suitable for those who have experienced cross-country skiing before and are comfortable with Grade 1. You will continue to master your technique on more varied terrain with gentle ascents or descents. These weeks require a slightly higher level of fitness. If you are a sporty type with a sense of balance and a quick learner, it is possible to book this trip even if you are a beginner.

Grade 3: Intermediates
These tours may include skiing on hilly terrain covering longer distances and are particularly suitable for improvers who want to push on and try some more varied terrain. Be prepared for skiing in wild areas with some unmaintained tracks.

Grade 4: Advanced
Suitable for experienced skiers who are confident in varied terrain including steeper ascents and descents and skiing in unmaintained tracks in the wild.

Grade 5: Challenging
This grade is for very experienced skiers looking for a new challenge and real adventure, testing themselves in the wild with mostly unmaintained tracks. At this level it is more than just a skiing holiday, it is an adventure!
