High Tatras

The High Tatras, located in the north of the country is the oldest of Slovakia's nine national parks, covering the high-mountain area of the Tatras.  It is home to a unique protected area of flora and fauna, containing species such as dwarf pine and rare animal species such as the eagle, bear and marmot.  The chamois, the symbol of Tatras,is one of the most precious species, and only 1000 animals survive at present. 

The whole territory of the High Tatras is a paradise for walking, cycling, skiing and climbing.  Many of the most popular walks and treks are here in the High Tatras.Discover amazing wildlife, deep canyons, alpine meadows, lakes and waterfalls and majestic rocky peaks.  Explore areas where bears, wolves and lynx still live in their natural environment, walk through untouched nature, listen to rare birds and breathe the fresh mountain air.

And located at ‘the roof’ of Slovakia, rising to an altitude of 2,654m is Gerlachovsky Stit, the highest peak of the entire Carpathian Mountains, which stretch from Slovakia all the way through Romania to Serbia.  The whole territory of the High Tatras is a paradise for walking, with no less than 10 peaks higher than 2,600m and another 15 peaks over 2,500m.

A cable car ride to Lomnicky Peak is surely a MUST when visiting the High Tatras. At an altitude of 2,634m, you can admire the amazing sight of the majestic Tatra peaks all around.  Don’t be surprised to see the famous Tatra chamois or even one of the seven species of eagle that guard the territory of Slovakia. Among the best places to choose for access to the High Tatras are thepicturesque mountain tourist resorts of Starý Smokovec, Tatranská Lomnica, and Štrbské Pleso, with a convenient modern train service connecting the resorts.
