Among the youngest of world capitals, Bratislava’s history goes back to medieval times. A once coronation town of the Habsburgs and often visited by Maria Teresa, it was an important centre of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy.
Among the outstanding features of this city are the majestic Devin Castle, perched above the confluence of the Danube and Morava and Bratislava Castle, situated on a hill above the old town, with stunning views over the Danube River.
Walk through Michalska Brana, the remaining city gate preserved from the medieval fortifications and admire the picturesque streets, surrounded by baroque architecture, including the famous Grassalkovichov Palace, home of the Slovak President.
Bratislava now represents a modern metropolis, open to Europe and the rest of the world. Visitors are attracted by the cosiness of this rather small city that nevertheless, possesses a throbbing social life and historic charms.
